Would it be an overstatement to say that an overemphasis on Global Warming in the past five years has been the biggest misallocation of resources since the Vietnam war?! Well, yes. HOWEVER, to say that the trendy blitz of late was a indeed a massive misallocation of money, research, manpower and passion as well as an unfair guilt trip of millions of Americans, I think is completely fair. Now, I have nothing against people trying to curb their carbon footprint, but when say billions of dollars are spent on Solar power and wind power projects instead of Environmental restoration and wilderness protection (which has the added benifit of reducing carbon) I think there is a problem. Carbon footprints are too intangible a concept to garner long term support from the masses, but accessible enough for sanctimonious hippies to latch onto to rectify that bad relationship with their kids, or that thing they did when they were at burning man while on a bad trip, or whatever other moral fucking baggage they are carrying around that they hope earth mother will forgive if they eat enough tofu and listen to enough world music. Much like their vegan comrades who eats soy grown on destroyed Brazilian Rainforest touting its green merits, the global warming crusader is rife with contradiction. I have nothing against the global warming crusader who doesn't act like the douchebags described above, and I know my situational awareness doesn't extend much past the pseudo-realty that is Portland, but if they just harnessed that passion they feel for climate change and directed it toward restoration and preservation we would actually see the results around us; which would in turn inspire more and more people to do the same in that cyclical pattern of positivity we only get when there is perceivable change taking place before our eyes.
Plant a tree. It is there in front of people. Its benefits are tangible and real and provide verifiable evidence to the next generation that we didn't just sit on our asses and watch the world destroy itself. Habitat and wilderness protection are lasting causes that should never be overshadowed by whatever trendy PC cause is having its fifteen minutes.
In short: You cant sit in the shade of a Carbon Credit.
