A Fathom is 6 feet and used specifically for measuring depth of water. The origins of modern burials are also rooted in maritime tradition as graves are placed six feet under the earth- this is rooted in the need to weight bodies during sea burials, which to be successful required six fathoms of water. This is the origin of the phrase "To deep Six"
